Abstract

Single detached leaves of three Arachis hypogaea lines and one line of each of the wild species A. pintoi, A. villosulicarpa and A.(?) glabrata were exposed to 14CO2 for 6 h under field conditions. Two A. hypogaea lines and one line of each of the same wild species plus A. monticola were similarly treated in a growth chamber. Significant differences in 14C translocation (percentage of total 14C recovered from plant parts other than the labelled leaf) occurred among genotypes in the growth chamber but not in the field. A. hypogaea lines translocated most 14C and A.(?) glabrata least. The relationship between ploidy level and translocation was not clear since tetraploid A.(?) glabrata and the diploids A. pintoi and A. villosulicarpa translocated similar percentages of 14C but less than the tetraploids A. monticola and A. hypogaea. A significant positive correlation (r = +0.79) occurred between translocation rates and rates of net photosynthesis.
