Abstract
Field experiments were conducted at the IRRI farm to study the effects of cropping system and crop residue management on the physical properties of rainfed wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.) soils. Soil tilth varied with clay content. Cropping system and crop residue management affected tilth by changing the soil consistency. They had pronounced effects on the range of soil moisture levels optimum for ease of tillage in sandy clay loam soil. Puddling was classified according to quality, on the basis of change in apparent specific volume (ΔASV) of the silty clay soil and availability of soil moisture, as follows: granulated (ΔASV = 0.03–0.05 cm3 g−1); paste ΔASV = 0.06–0.09 cm3 g−1); and muddy (ΔASV > 0.10 cm3 g−1). The ΔASV of the silty clay soil was dependent on cropping system, crop residue management, and method of land preparation for rice. Sandy clay loam soil was difficult to puddle because of its low water-holding capacity, swelling property and plasticity number. Puddling the silty clay soil reduced soil moisture stress and soil redox potential, but more energy was required to plow the puddled field than to plow the nonpuddled field for a dry-season crop.
