Abstract

3 groundnut cultivars were maintained at soil water levels ranging from moderately wet to very dry in irrigated plots with rainfall-control shelters. Pod yield and quality were significantly reduced in treatments receiving <30 cm water during the growing season. Yield and quality tended to improve as irrigation increased to 40 and 60 cm. Average harvestable unshelled net yields for 1970-4 were 4.46, 5.08 and 4.54 t/ha for cv. Florigiant, Florunner and Tifspan, respectively, when irrigated to a depth of 60 cm when the soil moisture tension in the surface 30 cm reached 0.2 bar. When the soil water tension in the surface 30 cm reached 15 bar before irrigation, yields were 2.63, 3.34 and 3.13 t/ha, respectively. Water extraction to a depth of 106 cm was recorded. Apparent plant water use from profile depths >60 cm was observed at about 75 days after sowing. Evapotranspiration was estimated on a daily basis for a period of 130 days using soil water measurements to a depth of 1.2 m since rainfall and groundwater movements were very small. Water use by Florigiant was greater than that by Florunner, and the early-maturing Tifspan reached its greatest water use earlier than did the other cultivars
