Abstract
4 sorghum cv. were sown at 1-month intervals throughout the year to study their vegetative and reproductive phases and possible influence of these phases on grain yield. The panicle development from initiation to 50% flowering was divided into 3 phases viz., branch initiation phase, spikelet differentiation phase and inflorescence elongation phase. The yield was significantly higher in Jan., Feb., March and Dec. sowings, followed by June to Aug. sowings and Sept. to Nov. sowings. Vegetative phase exerted a positive influence on yields, though it was not the major factor in determining yield. It was suggested that the final yield depends upon an interaction of spikelet development period, rate of spikelet initiation, DM production and temp
