Abstract

During 1983, 5 cultivars and 41 breeding lines of sweet sorghum were evaluated for their potential to produce sugar and to serve as raw materials for the production of energy in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The promising breeding line Mer 75-10 has been released for comnercial production under the name 'Cowley' . Characterized by its high quality and tonnage, Cowley also possesses good disease resistance. Other promising lines for sugar production include Mer 80-10, Mer 81-2, Mer 81-4, Mer 81-8, Mer 82-20, Mer 82-22, and Mer 82-23. Breeding lines noted for high tonnage are Mer 81-5, Mer 82-4, and Mer 82-14
