Abstract

In field trails at Coimbatore during the SW and NE monsoon seasons (244.2 and 762.7 mm rainfall, resp.,) in 1979-80, sorghum cv. CO.21, CO.22 and CO.23 were sown in flat beds at the top of the ridge, halfway down the ridge, at the bottom of the furrow, in beds separated by furrows 135 cm apart and in raised beds levelled after the furrows were opened. Grain yields during the SW monsoon season were unaffected by sowing method, but in the NE monsoon season yields ranged from 1.29 t/ha from crops sown at the ridge top to 1.88 t from plants grown on raised beds. Sorghum cv. CO.23 produced 1.39 and 1.92 kg grain/ha during SW and NE monsoon seasons, resp., compared wtih 1.15 and 1.24 t/ha from CO.21, and 1.13 and 1.79 t from CO.22
