Abstract

In field trials at Rahuri in 1979-80 sorghum cv. CSH-5 was sown (a) in rows 45 cm apart, (b) in paired rows with 30 cm between rows and 60 cm between pairs or (c) in rows 90 cm apart and groundnuts cv. SBX1 were sown in single rows between (a) or in double rows between (b) and (c). Sorghum was given 120 kg N, 60 kg P and 60 kg K/ha with an additional 20 kg N and 50 kg P or 50 or 25% of this rate applied when groundnuts were also present. Sorghum grain yields were highest (3.91 t/ha) in (a) and were 3 and 10% lower in (b) and (c), resp. Sowing pattern had no significant effect on groundnut yields except in 1980 when pod weight was significantly higher in (c) than in (a) or (b). Sorghum cv. CSH-5 and the bunch-type groundnut cv. SBX1 were mutually incompatible and the need for research into cv. selection for increased compatibility is stressed. Addition of 10 kg N and 25 kg P/ha in addition to normal fertilizer requirements was beneficial and intercropping was economically beneficial as a result of increased yield stability
