Abstract

The report provides a brief descriptive handbook of the major cropping enterprises used in the Eastern ORD (EORD) of Upper Volta, based on farm survey data collected during the 1978/79 agricultural year. Ch. 1 describes the coverage of the survey and data obtained, Ch. 2 summarizes cropping patterns, yields, and the timing of agricultural activities during the 1978 season. Ch. 3 gives detailed regional crop enterprise budgets for six major crop enterprises: sorghum/millet, maize, groundnuts, soybeans, cotton and rice. These budgets demonstrate the low productivity of agriculture in the EORD, especially in cotton and groundnuts, which typically generate higher incomes elsewhere in West Africa. Rice has the highest productivity but limited marketing outlets. The low and unstable productivity of sorghum/millet is most striking. As this is the staple food, it needs heaviest concentration of development (technology) efforts
