Abstract

Enterprise budgets for bajra, jowar, cotton, wheat, and groundnuts as dry land crops in Bijapur district Karnataka, India, are presented and their policy implications for resource use, resource development and output growth in dry land areas examined. The study is based on primary data from 113 farmers in the taluk, 1974/75. The enterprise budgets yielded maximum net income for groundnuts, followed by jowar, cotton, wheat and bajra. However, one rupee spent on cultivation of jowar yielded the maximum return of Rs 2.53, followed by groundnuts (Rs 1.82), cotton (Rs 1.57), wheat (Rs 1.23) and bajra (Rs 1.09). The weaknesses of the output price policy in bringing about the desired changes in dry land areas are highlighted. It is argued that input price subsidy would be more effective in bringing about the expected changes in dry land areas
