Abstract
In 2 years soyabean and grain sorghum grown together and harvested when the soyabean was in flower (DM 33-35%) gave only 61 and 75% as much silage as maize harvested at 34-39% DM; soyabean/sorghum harvested when the soyabean was forming pods (44% DM) gave 81% as much silage as maize. Costs of maize silage were $1-3/ton less than for soyabean/sorghum silage. In days 40-90 of lactation Jersey cows ate 10-11% more maize silage than early-cut soyabean/sorghum silage, gave 4 lb (about 10%) more fat-corrected milk (FCM) per day and gained more weight. The intake of late-cut soyabean/sorghum silage was the same as that of maize silage but FCM yield and weight gain were lower. Income over feed costs was higher with maize silage than with soyabean/sorghum silage.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In feeding trials during 1979-80, silage made from non-bird-resistant type grain sorghum and soyabean, was inferior both in quality and cost efficiency to maize silage. DM yield in 1980 was 9272 lb/ac for maize compared with 6980 and 7525 lb for flower stage soyabean or pod stage soyabean mixed with sorghum. Furthermore the cows did not eat it from choice and the fat-corrected milk production/cow was reduced by 0.9 lb/day
