Abstract
Freshly harvested seeds of maize, sorghum and soyabeans were dried to 8 or 10% m.c., treated with fungicides then stored in (a) sealed polythene bags, (b) paper envelopes or (c) tin cans under ambient conditions (28-30 deg C, 80% RH) or air-conditioned at 20 deg and 50% RH. Seed m.c. increased with increasing storage duration in all packaging except (c) for maize and sorghum. Soyabean seed m.c. however decreased m.c. in the air-conditioned environment in (a) and (b). Seed germination decreased with length of storage especially in soyabean, the decrease being more rapid for seeds of higher initial m.c. and faster in (a) and (b) than in (c). In (c) under air-conditioned environments, germination after 18 months storage was 87.3, 77.3 and 52.6% for maize, sorghum and soyabeans, resp., at the lower initial seed m.c
