Abstract
A survey was carried out on the species of Hemiptera in a sorghum plot at Hyderabad, India, in 1976. Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) occurred during both the rainy and the winter seasons. Empoasca flavescens (F.) and Nephotettix virescens (Dist.) were observed in small numbers during the early stages of the crop. Vietnara maculifrons (Motsch.) and Typhlocyba sp. occurred in the rainy season in small numbers. Peregrinus maidis (Ashm.) was observed mainly in the whorls of young seedlings in both the rainy and winter seasons. Nezara viridula (L.) was observed in both seasons at all stages of crop growth, while Dolycoris indicus Stal appeared only during the winter, and Menida histrio (F.) was present in small numbers at the later stages of crop growth in both seasons. Cletus sp. occurred in small numbers at the later crop stage during the rainy season. Spilostethus pandurus (Scop.) (Lygaeus pandurus) occurred in both seasons in small numbers, while Graptostethus servus (F.) was observed only in the rainy season. Calocoris angustatus Leth. occurred in very large numbers at the panicle formation stage in both seasons. The pests requiring control were E. flavescens, Nephotettix virescens, V. maculifrons, Typhlocyba sp. and S. pandurus
