Abstract
The effect of sowing dates and amount of seed sown per hectare on the infestation of sorghum by Atherigona soccata Rond. and ultimately on the yield of green fodder was studied in the Punjab, India, by sowing seed in April, May, June, July and September at 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha. The maximum number of eggs was laid on the September-sown crop and the minimum on the crops sown in May and June. The same trend was observed with regard to the incidence of dead-hearts due to infestation by the pest. The number of eggs laid and the incidence of dead-hearts were not affected by sowing rate on any individual sowing date. The yield of green fodder from the April-sown crop was greater than those from the crops sown in June and July, despite the occurrence of 12.5-18.2% dead-hearts in the April-sown crop as compared with 4.8-10.2% dead-hearts in the crops sown in June and July. A higher yield of green fodder was obtained from 100 kg seed/ha than from 50 kg/ha sown on any one date, but there was no difference in yields from 75 and 100 kg/ha. When infestation was high (12.5-27.1% dead-hearts) in the crops sown in April and September, a higher yield of green fodder was obtained from 75 kg seed/ha than from 50 kg/ha.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:A. soccata incidence was highest on Sept.-sown sorghum, intermediate on April- and June-sown crops and lowest on May-sown crops; the incidence was similar with sowing rates of 50-100 kg/ha. April-sown crops, despite higher incidence, gave the highest fresh fodder yield. Yields were higher with a sowing rate of 75-100 kg/ha than with 50 kg/ha
