Abstract

Combine header losses during harvesting of standing and lodged grain sorghum were investigated by comparing a conventional platform header with a row crop header. The latter was more efficient in both standing and lodged grain and gathered most lodged seed heads unless they fell parallel to row direction. In a test in 1979 with typical conditions, the extra grain saved by the row crop header was 0.6 and 5.3%, resp., of the crop yield for standing, moderately and highly lodged sorghum
