Abstract

In trials to determine the critical stage of weed control in sorghum, treatments consisted of different weed-free and no weeding periods and 4 fertility levels under rainfed and irrigated conditions. The most critical period of crop/weed competition was between 15 and 30 days after sowing when the yield was 76-82% of the weed free period till harvest. Cv. CSH-5 was superior to cv. CSV-3 in yield and weed competition. DM production of weeds was several times higher than that of the crop up to 60 days but later a reverse trend was observed. Weed DM increased with increase in fertility level, indicating that higher yields could not be maintained by simply increasing N in the presence of weeds. The weeds absorbed more moisture than the crop and affected its yield
