Abstract
In field trials on spatial arrangements in intercropping systems under rainfed conditions in 1975-6 sorghum grain yield increased by 21.6, 20.3, 29.2, 36.5 and 14.2% when grown in association with green gram [Vigna radiata], black gram [Vigna mungo], grain and fodder cowpeas and groundnut, resp., when compared with sorghum alone. Spatial arrangements had only marginal effects on sorghum yield but the yields of all the intercrops were appreciably affected. Paired rows with 2 rows of intercrop in 90 cm spacing resulted in max. yield of all the intercrops. The land equivalent ratio (LER) was also influenced considerably by different intercrops and spatial arrangements. Sowing of sorghum in paired rows having 2 rows of grain cowpeas within 90 cm spacing gave max. LER; however, net returns were max. with fodder cowpeas in the same spatial arrangement
