Abstract
Some doubts are expressed regarding the adequacy on the benefits often claimed to accrue from intercropping systems of the replacement series type. The doubts are illustrated by the results obtained in trials conducted at several dryland locations in India during 1971-8. The land equivalent ratio measure is inadequate to measure total productivity or incomes. Expected money value is recommended as a better measure for trials on intercropping systems involving opt. populations of both components to establish conclusions in this area of research
