Abstract
The rationale for systematic assessment of priorities for agricultural research for development is explained and introduced in this chapter. A brief overview is provided on the evolution of agricultural-research-for-development portfolios and institutional contexts, particularly the expansion of natural resources and policy-oriented research, the increasing number of goals that such research is intended to address and the recent shifts from core funding to competitive grants. The implications of these shifts for priority-setting methods are described and are related to the goals of the present volume. The introduction concludes by defining the intended audience for the book and introducing the content of the subsequent chapters.
