Abstract

In a field experiment, sorghum Co. 20 was grown on a red and a black Coimbatore soil under rain-fed conditions and was given 45 or 60 kg N/ha, 22.5 or 30 (where 60 kg N applied) kg P/ha and 0 or 22.5 kg K/ha, as (a) 100% as basal dressing, (b) 50% basal + 50% at tillering or (c) 50% basal + 50% at tillering as a foliar application. Grain and straw yield was higher in the red than the black soil. Grain yields increased with increasing N application in (a) and (c) but these increases were significant only for the red soil. Increased P application increased grain and straw yield in the red soil only. K application had no effect on yield in either soil. Application of 45 kg N + 22.5 kg P + 22.5 kg K/ha as (b) gave highest grain yields of 2.27 t/ha in the black soil and easiest means of application. In the red soil only N and K uptake increased with N application especially in (c)
