Abstract

The potential of brown-midrib low-lignin mutants (bmr mutants) for improving forage quality are reviewed. After a brief history of the trait and the genetics of mutations found and induced in Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor and Pennisetum glaucum [P. americanum], the effects of the bmr trait on forage quality (lignin, total fibre, phenolic, neutral cell wall sugar and N content, digestibility and in vitro digestion) are discussed. Leaf and stem anatomies of normal and bmr S. bicolor and P. glaucum are compared and the influence of the bmr trait on animal performance, intake and digestibility is examined using examples mainly from studies with Z. mays silage.
