Abstract
Data are presented on the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of twelve varieties during growth on a soil containing 55.5% clay to which NPK fertilizer was added. On the basis of data on milled root samples prepared at four intervals from 30 days after sowing until harvest, it is shown that (1) varieties varied in CEC throughout the growth period and showed intervarietal differences, (2) the hybrids CSH1 and CSH4 absorbed much more NPK than their respective parents, IS84 X CK60B and Swarna X 1036B, and (3) 302 absorbed most NPK
