Abstract
The yield and gross returns were studied over 2 yr in 3 experiments on inter-cropping in maize and sorghum. Paired-row sowing recorded 8-12% and 44% higher grain yield in maize and sorghum, resp., over conventional equidistant sowing at the same plant populations. Additional gross returns due to intercropping were 24-76% in maize (1975-6 winter) and 4-56% in maize and 15-75% in sorghum (1976 rainy season) compared with pure stands. Intercropping was beneficial, particularly in the limited cropping periods of this semi-arid tropical zone
