Abstract
During 1983-84 the incidence of TLCV infection of tomatoes in Karnataka, India, was investigated. From July to Nov. the incidence ranged from 17 to 53% and from Feb. to May up to 100% of the crops were infected. In sequential sowings 90-100% of plants were infected in plots sown between the end of Jan. and the end of May. Infection in plots sown later was progressively less. Tomato cv. Pusa Ruby suffered 50-70% yield losses when sown in Feb.-May. A strong correlation was obtained between the percentage incidence of TLCV and whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) numbers. TLCV was transmitted by B. tabaci to 23 host plants. B. tabaci was observed on 173 plant species around Bangalore. Five lines of Lycopersicon hirsutum (PI 390513, PI 390658, PI 390659, LA 386 and LA 1777) and 2 of L. peruvianum (PI 127830 and PI 127831) were resistant to TLCV. Covering the tomato seedling nursery with nylon net for 25-30 d plus 4 sprays of monocrotophos (as Nuvacron) at 10-d intervals after transplanting, delayed the spread of TLCV for 3-5 weeks and increased tomato yields
