Abstract
A total of 236 F10-derived lines from a broad-based bulk population were evaluated as single plants in a replicated honeycomb design experiment in 5 environments and as lines in a replicated hill-plot experiment in 3 environments. Mean yields from the latter experiment were used as the standard for measuring selection effectiveness in the former. Pooled correlations for grain yield, grain yield adjusted to take account of the yields of neighbouring plants, and biomass yield of single plants with grain yield of the lines in hill plots were 0.29±0.06, 0.27±0.06 and 0.37±0.06, respectively. With a 10% selection intensity, gains in grain yield (as a percentage of hill plot population mean) averaged 9.8±0.05, 8.3±0.06 and 11.0±0.05, respectively, with grain yield, adjusted grain yield and biomass yield of single plants as selection criteria. Discarding the lowest 10, 25 and 50% of plants for the 3 criteria, respectively, retained on average 97, 90 and 70%, respectively, of the top tenth of lines for grain yield. The results suggested that selecting for grain or biomass yield in a non-competitive field arrangement can successfully identify high-yielding lines.
