Abstract

Results of evaluations of grain sorghum, soyabeans and wheat in double cropping systems at Springfield and Milan, Tennessee in 1976 and 1977 are presented. The sowing methods and rates and the rates of applied fertilizer and chemical weed control systems used are described. It was found that grain sorghum gave higher yields when grown as a single crop in a conventional seedbed than when sown into green wheat, sown into wheat stubble or sown with conventional seedbed preparations after wheat harvest. The procedure of sowing soyabeans with a cyclone seeder into green wheat before harvest was a complete failure in 2 out of 4 trials. Before the practice of sowing soyabeans in green wheat can be successful, adequate soil moisture must be present at sowing and for several days afterwards and the wheat field free of weeds. Using this practice on the same field for >1 yr could produce severe weed problems. Sowing soyabeans in wheat stubble (no tillage) was less successful in 1977 than in 1976 due to dry weather and in some cases poor weed control
