Abstract

2. For 1 year 20 preschool children in Andhra Pradesh who attended a creche were given a diet with sorghum and black gram in the same proportions as in part 1. Controls were 20 similar children from the same area who were fed at home. By the end of the year mean weight of the 2 groups had increased by 1.5 and 0.5 kg, height by 8 and 4 cm, head circumference by 2 and 1, arm circumference by 1.7 and 0.5 and chest circumference by 2.8 and 1.0 cm, respectively. Haemoglobin value increased by 2.49 and 0.22 g/100 ml. Nitrogen balance studies with 6 healthy boys and girls 5 to 6 years old and weighing 13 to 14 kg, showed that percentage of N absorption was greater on a diet based on rice and red gram than on diets based on sorghum and black gram and sorghum and red gram
