Abstract

Several parts of the country are witnessing a serious drought. The result is acute drinking water shortages in Gujarat, Rajasthan, western Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. According to newspaper reports, several towns in Saurashtra are getting an extremely irregular supply of water(see table 1: Drinking water availability in Gujarat towns in April 2000). Most of the dams and reservoirs in the region have dried up. The government is trying to deal with the problem by providing water through tankers and by deepening existing borewells. The Central government has promised to run water trains. But is all this inevitable? That we have to do this every time the rainfall is less than normal?
