Abstract

Crops of Pennisetum americanum sown before 25 July escaped infection by Claviceps fusiformis while later plantings showed increased incidence of ergot. Disease intensity and yield increased with higher doses of N while increased K reduced them and counteracted the effect of high N and P. A dose of N:P:K at 100:50:40 kg/ha gave high yields with low ergot intensity. Systemic fungicides (Bavistin [carbendazim], Benlate [benomyl] and Brestanol [fentin chloride]) gave higher disease control as pre- and post-inoculation application than nonsystemics. Among the protectants tested, ziram, Du-Ter [fentin hydroxide], Dithane M-45 [mancozeb] and Difolatan [captafol] performed better when sprayed 24 h before inoculation. Insecticides reduced the disease, though only slightly. The best control was achieved with a mixture of carbendazim, benomyl or Brestanol with Sevin or Thiodan
