Abstract

Claviceps fusiformis sclerotia were best removed from Pennisetum americanum seed by the Specific Gravity Table (described). Cleaning by this method was convenient, rapid, and cost effective. Efficiency of separation was reduced by a higher sclerotial content of samples. Although efficient cleaning was also achieved by dipping samples in 20% salt sol. and scooping away the sclerotia, this method proved cumbersome, slow, more expensive and it reduced seed germination and seedling growth
