Abstract

Total sugars, reducing sugars and phenols were measured in internodes of 3 tolerant and 3 susceptible sorghum genotypes naturally infected by Macrophomina phaseolina in India in 1978. In tolerant genotypes sugar levels were 2-3 times higher than in susceptible ones, and phenol concn was also higher. In susceptible genotypes the sugar and phenol levels rose from the first to the seventh internode whereas in tolerant genotypes the phenol levels rose but the sugar levels fell. High levels of sugars and phenols are considered to be attributable to the resistance mechanism, and their measurement considered useful in identifying sources of resistance
