Abstract
The resistance to naturally-occurring populations of Spodoptera frugiperda of 25 sorghum lines selected for a wide range of physiological and morphological characteristics was evaluated in field-plot tests in Mississippi in 1980. Few significant differences in mean leaf-feeding damage were observed among the entries, which included lines with high and low leaf phenolic contents, brown midribs, low bloom level (reduced wax content) and high and low lysine contents. Damage ratings were consistently lower on 3 of 4 low-bloom lines than on their isogenic normal lines, and on low leaf phenolic lines than on the high leaf phenolic non-isogenic lines. However, none of the lines demonstrated acceptable levels of resistance to larval feeding
