Abstract

As a result of many recent studies on the identification and characterisation of the allelochemicals responsible for resistance in crop plants to insect pests, the different types of kairomones and allomones produced by plants are shown in a diagram, and those isolated from barley, cotton, cucurbits, lucerne, maize, potato, rice, sorghum, strawberry, sweet clover (Melilotus infesta), tobacco and tomato, together with the pests affected by them, are reviewed for each plant separately. The current status of research on allelochemicals and their role in the development of resistant crop varieties and of integrated pest management programmes are discussed
