Abstract

Monoxenic root/bacteria associations were initiated in test tubes containing agar medium free of N and carbohydrates. Seedlings of sorghum cv. Savanna-5, Coker 7723, B68181, B68027 and FS 25a were inoculated with a bacterial strain (Enterobacter agglomerans S85-9 or 1 of 3 strains of Azospirillum brasilense). Active acetylene reduction activity was observed in all inoculated plants; no ethylene was evolved in non-inoculated controls. When plants and intact agar-root systems were transferred to autoclaved soil, activity was not significantly different from natural (non-autoclaved) soil from Madison and Putnam counties, Florida. When moved into the field, inoculated treatments again were not signficantly different in acetylene reduction assays from natural soil
