Abstract
The growth and development of Mythimna separata (Wlk.) on maize, pasture grass, sugar-cane, sorghum, rice, finger millet (Eleusine coracana), wheat, Italian millet (Setaria italica), oats, brown top millet (Panicum miliaceum) and triticale were studied in the laboratory in India. Development of larvae was fastest on maize and slowest on rice. The pupal period ranged from 9.0 to 13.1 days. Significantly higher male pupal weights were recorded on finger millet than on the other plants, while female pupal weights were higher on both finger millet and sugar-cane. Adult emergence on maize, pasture grass, sugar-cane, sorghum, rice, finger millet, wheat, brown top millet and triticale ranged from 74 to 100%, while 40% emergence was observed on oats and 60% on Italian millet. Maize was the most suitable food-plant
