Abstract
A proprietary inoculum (Sila-bac) and a commercial non-protein nitrogen preparation (Cold-flo) were evaluated as silage additives in comparison to sodium hydroxide added during the manufacture of forage sorghum silage in concrete stave silos. Treatments consisted of Sila-bac at 1.0 lb/ton of fresh crop, Cold-flo at 11.5 lb/ton of fresh crop, NaOH at 24.5 lb/ton of fresh crop (equivalent to 3.8% on dry weight basis) and control (no additive). The whole sorghum, harvested at the dough stage, was ensiled for 40 days, and then given for 84 days to 4 groups of 18 heifer calves of initial bodyweight 414 lb. Rations consisted of silage plus 2.0 lb of supplement/heifer given twice daily, while sorghum grain was used in place of soya bean meal in the Cold-flo silage treatment, so that all rations had the equivalent of 12% crude protein. The NaOH silage also contained 8.35% potassium chloride. Overall gains per ton of silage were 74.0 lb with Sila-bac treatment, 64.0 lb with control, 62.2 lb with Cold-flo and 57.8 lb with NaOH. Cold-flo silage was the most stable on exposure to air, but DM losses were smaller with Sila-bac (about 9%) than with Cold-flo (15.4%) and were greatest with NaOH-treated silage (21%)
