Abstract
Eleven characters, including green and dry-fodder yield, were studied in a six-parent diallel cross involving S. vulgare, S. durra, S. caudatum, S. roxburghii, S. virgatum and S. sudanense. General combining ability (GCA) estimates for each character are given for the F1 and F2 of each parent, and values for the three crosses exhibiting greatest heterosis and specific combining ability are tabulated for each character. It is concluded from the association between GCA estimates for the F1 and F2 that the F2 can be used effectively in studies of combining ability. S. roxburghii and S. virgatum showed good GCA for most characters and are therefore recommended for use in breeding
