Abstract
Two experiments were conducted, one in 1973 and another the following year, with a view to relating agronomic characters before grain harvest to quality characters of the plant remnants left after harvest. The 32 hybrids used in the first experiment were made by crossing eight restorer lines with four male-sterile lines, and the 16 used in the second resulted from crossing four restorer lines with four male-sterile lines. Days to flowering, height, grain yield, leaf and stem protein contents, leaf and stem in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD) and leaf and stem contents of digestible protein were studied. In both experiments significant differences were found among female parents, male parents and hybrids for all characters except stem content of digestible protein in the first experiment and leaf protein content for the female parents in the second. The hybrids showed a range of variability for the forage characters as great as that for the agronomic characters. In all cases, general combining ability : specific combining ability ratios, as determined by the mean square ratios of females : females X males and males : females X males, exceeded 1.0. Leaf IVDMD, leaf protein content and leaf content of digestible protein were all highly and positively genetically correlated with grain yield in 1973 under favourable weather conditions but in 1974, under drought-stressed conditions, leaf protein content was highly and positively correlated with grain yield while stem IVDMD and stem content of digestible protein were negatively correlated with grain yield. Results indicated that breeding high-yielding grain hybrids with high-quality stems for forage could prove difficult
