Abstract

The subject is reviewed under the following main headings: genetic mapping (quantitative trait loci analysis, and resolving complex quantitative traits into single Mendelian components); molecular markers in exploitation of hybrid vigour, physical mapping, identification and characterization of genes corresponding to desirable traits, synteny, marker-assisted selection (MAS); MAS in breeding for disease and pest resistance, and cost-effectiveness in MAS.
