Abstract
Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolour (L.) moench) bagasse (SSB) a by-product obtained after juice extraction from the stalks of sweet sorghum contained 3.94 and 74.76 per cent crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF), respectively. The in sacco effective degradable dry matter (EDDM) and effective rumen degradable protein (ERDP) per cent of SSB were 40.60 and 55.30, respectively. The effect of feeding differently processed SSB based complete ration on nutrient utilization, growth and cost economics were studied in 24 graded Murrah buffalo bull calves distributed randomly into four experimental groups of six animals each in a completely randomized design. Experimental complete rations were formulated with SSB and concentrate in 50:50 and processed in to chopped SSB and concentrate (SSBC), mash (SSBM) and expander-extruder pellets (SSBP) and compared with sorghum straw based complete mash (SSM). The DM intake (g/d), digestibilities of DM, organic matter, crude protein and nitrogen free extract and nitrogen (N) balance were significantly (P<0.05) higher in buffalo calves fed SSBP ration but, comparable among SSBC, SSBM and SSM rations. The average daily gain (g/d) was significantly (P<0.01) higher and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly (P<0.01) lower in calves fed SSBP ration while comparable among SSBC, SSBM and SSM rations. The cost ()/kg gain was (P<0.01) lower in buffalo calves fed SSBP ration and (P<0.01) higher for SSM ration while comparable among SSBC and SSBM rations. The present study indicated that SSB may be economically used as an alternative roughage source to SS and feeding of complete rations in the form of expander-extruder pellets proved superior over chopped and mash forms of the same ration
