Abstract
The procedures in the present breeding programme are outlined, the history of varietal improvement is reviewed and the introduction of modern semidwarf, fertilizer-responsive varieties is discussed in detail. Extensive tables of data show the proportion of land planted to the most widely grown varieties for the major rice-growing provinces from 1976 to 1979
