Abstract
This comparative study examines the differences between the estimates published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on production and area of major cereal and non-cereal staple food crops and their statistics on cereal trade. It identifies the commodities and major countries for which wide divergences exist and attempts to measure the data differences between countries, geographical regions, economic groups, and world totals. Differences in the number of countries covered and time reference periods used do not seem to explain most of the discrepancies between the statistics of the two systems, although they contribute to the problem. Wide divergences remain between the trade figures on rice, for example, for the same country in the same reference period. These deviations must be attributed to data modifications that are justified by apparent weaknesses of national statistical systems. Because the data for developing countries are frequently the most divergent, policies to promote more efficient data gathering and dissemination seem to be needed
