Abstract

ICTA, the Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnologia Agricolas, was created in 1973 with its main objective being the generation of appropriate technology and its promotion in Guatemala. This study analyzes ICTA from a social science perspective, taking the organization (which forms part of the Guatemalan Ministry of Agriculture) as an example of changes in agricultural research strategies and organization. After examining reasons for, and the process of creating, ICTA, the study concentrates on aspects such as development of a participatory model in relation to landholders, decentralization and integration and relations between research and extension. Finally, the implications for programmes and policies relating to agricultural research and development are examined
