Abstract

Recent changes in rice harvesting in Java have attracted the attention of economists and sociologists who are concerned about income distribution in the rural sector. The changes have been attributed mainly to population pressure and new technology. This study focuses on the evolution of rice harvesting systems and its impact on the income distribution in the village community, based on an intensive survey of a typical rice village in West Java. The village studied is characterized by rice farming with stagnated technology and by heavy population pressure on limited land. The real wage rate in rice farming has declined. Rice harvesting systems have experienced major changes. Income distribution skew has increased and class differentiation among villagers has, thus, progressed
