Abstract
A thrice-weekly rice planting and harvesting system on a 250-m2 plot is evaluated. The system is compared with conventional production systems in the Philippines and elsewhere in terms of production, land use, labour use, labour distribution, waste requirement, capital use and economics of the system. The continuous rice production system (rice garden) efficiently utilizes about twice as much as labour, uses land fully throughout the year and produces three times the output of conventional two-crop rice production systems. With the return to labour and capital accounted at their opportunity cost, the system provides a return to land twice that of the conventional system.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In 1976-7 in an experiment on continuous rice cropping, rice cv. IR26 was transplanted into 250 m2 plots every other day so that 4 crops were grown on each plot annually. Total grain yield was 23 t/ha annually giving full employment for 3 men, compared with yields of 10 t/ha and employment for 1 man under the current double-cropping system in the Philippines. Return/ha was 2-fold the return from the double-cropping system
