Abstract

This paper reports on an AVRDC survey of Taiwan summer tomato producers. Main findings were as follows: (1) Lowland producers seek heat tolerant cultivars for early planting to gain higher prices, whereas highland producers seek improvement in appearance, yield and resistance to pests; (2) Temperature and rainfall variation, cultivar and soil quality were the major factors affecting production; (3) Yield depends on agronomic rather than economic factors; (4) The promotion of farm income and net returns depend on yield improvement and reduction in production costs
