Abstract
The new rice cv. IR42 is described; it outyielded most other IRRI cv. and in the wet and dry seasons of 1978 yielded 4.8 and 5.1 t/ha, resp. with no N applied and 5.7 and 6.7 t/ha, resp. with application of 60 kg N/ha at IRRI. Under saline, coastal saline, alkaline and Fe-toxic soils it yielded 5.6, 4.3, 4.5 and 4.3 t/ha, resp. In tests in S. and SE Asia it outyielded IR8 and ranked among the 3 highest-yielding cv
