Abstract

Grain sorghum is the second most important crop in Tanzania, after maize covering an area of approximately 400,000 hectares annually. The crop is grown in areas largely characterized by unreliable rainfall and acute shortages of irrigation facilities. By and large, package recomnendations have bcen meagre and fanners have almost invariably been growing their tall late-maturing varieties. These factors would seem to account for the rather unfortunate annual variation in the overall food availability
