Abstract
The tarai (Himalayan foothills) area had mild to severe Zn deficiency on the basis of Zn extractable from soil with diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid. Mean values for Zn in fodders were paddy straw 28, wheat straw 10, sorghum 26, maize 25, pearl millet 32, sugar cane tops 21, oats 49, berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum) 40, cowpeas (Vigna sinensis) 43, pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) straw 12, soya bean straw 13, black gram (Phaseolus mungo) straw 21 and lucerne 51 mu g/g. Calves, bullocks and cows had in blood Zn 252, 231 and 240 mu g/100 ml, respectively, with buffaloes similarly 185, 219 and 171. Sex and age had no definite effect on blood Zn. As animals are generally given fodders only in this area there is a possibility of relatively mild Zn deficiency
