Abstract
The effects of intercropping with fodder cowpea, grain cowpea, udid [Vigna mungo] and mung [V. radiata] on the yields and N economy of sorghum were studied. None of the intercropping systems significantly affected sorghum grain and straw yields, although yields of sorghum intercropped with udid or mung bean were higher than those from sorghum alone. Among the grain legumes the highest grain yield was obtained from udid (244 kg/ha) followed by mung (171 kg/ha) and cowpea (132 kg/ha). Increasing levels of fertilizer N up to 75 kg N/ha significantly increased sorghum grain and straw yields, but seed yields of legumes were not much improved by >25 kg N/ha. The results indicated that intercropping sorghum with udid could reduce the N fertilizer requirements of the sorghum crop by c. 9 kg N/ha
