Abstract

Field trials with sorghum on red shallow soils in the rainy seasons of 1975-6 showed that as long as the opt. levels of plant population (150 000/ha) and row width (45 cm) were maintained, the pattern of distribution of plants within the row had no significant effect on grain yield. Yield was decreased with plant population at <80% of the opt. level, irrespective of the spacing pattern
